3D Remix
3D Remix is a vanilla 3D resource pack, a tribute to the modding community, a "best of" style selection of 3D models from: 3D Default, Nautilus 3D, 3D Vanilla, Vanilla Tweaks, RAY's 3D Rails, Resource Tweaks, 3D Bow and 3D Models (UltiCraft Sandalone).
Fast, subtle and vanilla friendly
I have tried and tested almost all 3D resource packs on Modrinth and found that while most of them had brilliant ideas, not every part was designed equally well. After trying to load them on top of each other in different orders it became clear that the best solution is to create a Remix by selecting the best models from each resource pack.
Of course no pack is perfect, if you have a suggestion or found a bug, please contact me on Discord.
Selection criteria:
Keep the vanilla look and feel
I have upgraded visuals, improved usability and made the overall presentation more professional, while kept the original game's look and feel. Applied only the necessary texture changes that were required by the new 3D models.Performance is important
I have selected simple, subtle 3D versions of vanilla blocks and items. Did not alter blocks that are used in large quantities to avoid severe performance degradation. I have tested performance on a 1st generation M1 MacBook Air to make sure it is running well on lower powered systems.Convert only the appropriate blocks to 3D
Some blocks and items were intentionally left 2D, not just due to performance reason, but also to stay coherent with the vanilla aesthetic.
Amethyst, Buckets, Cobweb, Crops and flowers, Food Items, Glow Lichen, Lily Pad, Potions, Redstone Wire, Skulk Veins, Tools and Utilities, Vines are still 2D.
No emissive textures
I believe glow effects should be handled by Shader Packs or separate Emissive resource packs if the shader pack does not have this feature.
I recommend Complementary Shaders for the glow effects with Euphoria Patches mod. If you are using a less powerful system (like an M1 MacBook Air) and need a fast shader I recommend Mellow shader with a separate Emissive Shaders resource pack.
Minimize usage of Optifine
The only Optifine dependent feature right now is the 3D chain of Hanging Signs. This requires Optifine or EMF mod to be installed and is visible only in 2D in an unmodded vanilla game. Please note that Iron and Copper Chains are not affected, only the small connections directly above the Hanging Signs.
Only 3D chain on Hanging Signs requires the EMF mod.
Armor Stand, Beds, Boats, Torches can be added separately
These highly recommended features are missing from the pack for two reasons:
- The required material is copyrighted
- I recommend more than one different option
You can find the links to these options below and you can add them separately on top of 3D Remix without any issue.
Handheld item changes:
Minecraft has a mix of 2D and 3D items. 2D items look better in item frames while 3D items look better when holding in hand. As it is a matter of taste who prefers what, I have decided to keep them in the original vanilla style and make only these minimal changes:
Lantern items are now 3D
Lanterns are used frequently in hands to lite up the environment, and rarely used in item frames, because they can be placed on the floor or you can hang them up under a block, so why would anyone use an item frame to place a lantern? 3D Lanterns are from Nautilus 3D.
I prefer the included Nautilus 3D lanterns, but also highly recommend another option: you can replace them with Better Lanterns by placing it above 3D Remix.
Torches have received a subtle upgrade
Like lanterns, torches are used frequently in hands to lite up the environment, and rarely used in items frames, because they can be placed on the ground or walls, so why would anyone use an item frame to place a torch?
However I recommend using one of these superior additional packs placed on top of 3D Remix:
- My favorite is Torches Reimagined that successfully imitate the medieval blazing torches.
- Another good option is Weskerson's Torches
Tools and Utilities are still 2D but with brilliant 3D effect
Axes, Clock, Compass, Fishing Rod, Hoes, Pickaxes, Recovery Compass, Shears, Shovels and Swords are all upgraded with gorgeous 3D effects by GeForeLegend of 3D Default while keeping the original 2D style. The new 2D Spears are yet to receive the same upgrade.2D Bow and Crossbow have "separated" arrows
Arrows and fire rockets are now in front of the bow and crossbow for a more natural, logical appearance.
The 2D Projectiles mod matches them very well and gives you 2D arrows all over the game.
Optionally you can use Bray's Better Bow & Arrows that matches the Real Arrow Tip mod. This provides nice, variated 3D arrows if you prefer the default Minecraft 3D arrow style.
Mace is now 3D with 2D handle
The original 2D Mace just didn't feel right with the vanilla 3D heavy core flattened on a stick. I have selected 3D Default because it's head is smaller and less distracting than other packs and kept the original 2D handle.
Trident is unmodified but...
The new Spears are also 2D sprites in the game. The vanilla 3D Trident is an exception, and I believe should be 2D as well to be in line with other parts of the game.
I recommend using a 2D Trident texture pack:
3D block upgrades:
I have selected only simple, subtle 3D versions of vanilla blocks and items. You can check the details and reason why certain selections have been made.
Ladder upgraded to 3D
The most annoying "feature" of vanilla Minecarft is the flat ladder that looks like as if it was painted on the wall. There are several 3D ladders on Modrinth. Some ladders are too thick, leaving only a narrow space in a one block wide shaft to move around, while others are major deviation from the original art style.
I have decided to use a 2/16th wide version from Resource Tweaks that is close to the original style.
If you prefer a thinner 1/16th wide ladder version, you can download it from Vanilla Tweaks or just rename the included ladder_thin.json file to ladder.json in the resource pack.
Chains and Bars are now 3D
Most 3D chains are just too thick and does not fit the lanterns attached to them very well. Both the included Nautilus 3D version and the optionally recommended Better Lanterns have nice, thin 3D chains compatible with all the new copper chain items.
3D Bars are really hard to implement. They should be thin and be coherent if placed on top of each other in multiple layers. Should connect well at the corners and with the candles often placed on top of them. The best implementation I have found is from SkeletonKing.
True 3D Doors, Trapdoors, Copper Grate
Very common building elements that has some see-through holes and needed a proper 3D implementation upgraded from their pseudo-3D from.
They look like 3D in the original vanilla game, but if you take a closer look, only the front surface is rendered and they have no depth. Some people might like them that way, as proper 3D rendering reduces the visible area of the outside world when used as window elements.
I am not 100% happy with any of the packs though, and plan to do my own version, but 3D Default is "good enough" to be included.
3D "notched" Ores
My choice is 3D Default, except for Guilded Blackstone that was selected from 3D Vanilla. I have tested at least dozens of 3D Ores resource packs and all of them used the same basic concept: the minerals sticking out of the stone blocks. This might conflict with neighboring elements in certain builds, and they feel unnatural.
Ores in 3D Default are different: instead of sticking out, there are little notches on the surface of the stone blocks giving you a hint that this is no ordinary stone, and precious minerals can be found inside.
Dripstones have 3D cores
My choice is Nautilus 3D. I have tested all the 3D dripstone packs, including Vanilla Tweaks, and this is the only pack that upgrades the core of the dripstones to 3D, but also keeps the sharp edges, so you still have the feeling that they are dangerous to fall onto.
Maintains good parity with the original art style.
Thin 3D Rails design
Another "there is only one perfect choise" situation. The iron railway tracks on the vanilla rail block are 2/16th wide and consist of one lighter and one darker line. All 3D Rail packs follow this setup, but I believe that the darker lines are shades of the lighter ones to imitate "3D" immersion without being actually 3D.
This is why the only 3D Rail resource pack I truly like is RAY's 3D Rails where the rails are 1/16th wide and closely resemble the real-world counterpart.
Updated Barrel
Barrels are used in large quantities in designs and need a fast 3D version. It was very hard to find a good one. For example the cork in the 3D Default pack sticks out and runs through the item frame that is often attached to the front.
After testing almost all dedigns I have selected the barrel from 3D Models (UltiCraft Sandalone) that I believe is the best on Modrinth. Subtle 3D indent on the back differentiates it from standard planks and on the front side emphasize the roundness of the lid without extending the design outside of the standard cube shape. Its open state does not show the internals, and I prefer this solution because builders often use it in an open state as a design element.
Matching Variated Bookshelves, Chiseled Bookshelf and Loom
They are a very common and important design elements for building interiors, often mixed and matched with each other to create a variated wall of bookshelves. My biggest challenge was to integrate them into a coherent bookshelf design.
I have used 3D Variated Bookshelves resource pack having only a subtle 1/16th deep indent and nice shelf variations with some horizontal books. It is very similar to the Vanilla Tweaks design, but some books hang off the shelves a little bit improving the overall ambiance.
Matching Chiseled Bookshelf design is from Vanilla Tweaks.
Loom is from Nautilus 3D because this one has the same side and back indent and the same dark brown texture as common bookshelves and looks good to imitate empty shelves.
3D see-through Glass and Beacon
I have removed 3D Glass Panes from 3D Default because they had issues with Continuity and kept the 3D Glass blocks. Glass panes are flat anyhow, no need to make them 3D. On the other hand, Glass Blocks are very strange in vanilla Minecraft: even if they are translucent, only the front surface is rendered and they have no depth, the back side is invisible. 3D Glass design fixes this issue.
It is highly recommended using the Continuity mod with 3D Glass for the perfect experience, see the screenshot in the galery.
Another recommended addition is Clear Glass Connected resource pack. This removes the unnecessary glass "glint" texture but keeps everything else intact. A bit more revolutionary option is Glamorous Glass that removes the frames as well and boost colors of stained glass for an even more realistic, modern representation.
Mushrooms, Fungi and Sugar Cane converted to 3D
- Mushrooms and Fungi have several 3D versions and I prefer the simple yet perfect Vanilla Tweaks edition.
- Sugar Cane has been converted to 3D with 3D Default.
- Bamboo, Cactus, Cake, Dried Kelp, Hay Block, Melon, Pumpkin, Sea Pickle are already 3D in the vanilla game, but received an upgraded 3D look from 3D Default.
Most crops, plants and food blocks intentionally left 2D, not just due to performance reason, but to stay coherent with the vanilla aesthetic. My recommendation is to couple 3D Remix with (Bee's) Fancy Crops by placing it below 3D Remix for the best overall experience.
Tasty Items is a good match to improve eating animation, like drinking from a bottle or eating a soup without consuming the plate with it.
For bushy leaves effect I also recommend Motschen's Better Leaves because this is the fastest resource pack and very close to the vanilla style. However, my personal favorite is Mizuno Better Leaves Vanilla, please give it a try.
Enhanced Utility blocks
- Crafting Table, Cartography Table, Fletching Table, Smithing Table have received very subtle 3D effects from 3D Vanilla
- Brewing Stand from Resource Tweaks
- Beehive, Bee Nest (with 5 different stages showing how much honey they have) and Composter from Nautilus 3D
- Blast Furnace, Crafter, Enchanting Table, End Portal Frame, Furnace, Jukebox, Lectern, Noteblock, Respawn Anchor, Smoker, Stonecutter, Trial Chambers and Vault are selected from 3D Default
- I recommend improved spawners resource pack for better Vault visibility.
Updated Redstone Lamp, Copper Bulbs, Pistons and Lever
As a general princinple, I have not changed Redstone components, except these that are often used as design elements but kept the Redstone dust in original 2D form because it is often used as "imitation of blood".
I have changed Pistons to the Bedrock design from Vanilla Tweaks and adopted the sticky side textures so you can see in every angle which piston is sticky.
Redstone Lamp, Copper Bulbs and Lever designs are from 3D Default.
Beds, Boats and Armor Stands are not updated
Because all the options I like are copyrighted.I recommend upgrading them with these superior external packs:
- Bee's Cozier Beds
- Better Boats
- Armorstands Reimagined or Fancy Armor Stand if you want them to look like players.
